Apple TV is a terrific streaming service, offering a slew of critically-acclaimed ad-free shows, many with casts featuring an older actor or two such as Severance, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Joy. But Apple TV costs $14.99 a month – and that’s too much. Here’s how seniors (and everyone else) can watch Apple TV free or cheap.
Note that deals change so verify eligibility on Apple’s site or with the provider before signing up.
Free: Use the Free 7-Day Trial
New subscribers can start a free seven-day trial through the Apple TV app (on iPhone, iPad, smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, etc.) or at tv.apple.com. You’ll need an Apple Account and a payment method on file. The service auto-renews at the full rate unless you cancel. So if you’re worried about forgetting to cancel, see our article, The Free Trial Trap, for tips.
Senior Tip: Set a phone or calendar reminder for day 6 so you can cancel easily in Settings, Your Name, Subscriptions, if you decide it’s not worth it.
Free: Get 3 Months Free with a New Apple Device
Buy a qualifying new Apple product (iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV 4K) from Apple or an authorized reseller and you can redeem three free months of Apple TV. You generally have 90 days after first setting up the device to claim it. Open the Apple TV app after setup; the offer usually appears automatically.
This is typically limited to once per Apple Account or Family Sharing group. If you’ve claimed a similar multi-month offer before, it may not be available.
Cheap: T-Mobile Customers Can Pay Just $3 a Month
Qualifying T-Mobile voice plans (including certain Experience More, Experience Beyond, and 55+ plans) offer Apple TV for $3 per month. This is a great deal and you can count The TV Answer Man has one who has taken advantage of it. Check your account or the T-Life app to confirm eligibility and redeem.
Cheap: Bundle With Peacock
Apple offers a Peacock/Apple TV bundle for $17.99 a month. That’s a meaningful savings versus paying for both services separately. (That would cost at least $28 a month.) It’s a good option if you also watch Peacock’s sports, news, or shows.
Cheap: Consider Apple One if You Use Other Apple Services
Apple One bundles Apple TV with Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and iCloud+ storage. The Individual plan is about $21.95 a month. Higher tiers add Fitness+ and News+. New subscribers can often get a free trial (around one month). If you already pay for Apple Music, or need extra iCloud storage, the bundle can make Apple TV effectively cheaper.
Cheap: Student Plan Option
Verified students can subscribe to the Apple Music Student Plan (typically around $6–7 a month), which includes free access to Apple TV. If you have a college-age grandchild or child, this can be an affordable route, especially when combined with Family Sharing.

Cheap: Share One Subscription with Family Sharing
One Apple TV subscription can be shared with up to five other family members through Apple’s Family Sharing feature. Each person uses their own Apple Account, so watch history and recommendations stay personal. The family organizer sets it up in Settings on an iPhone or iPad.
Splitting $14.99 among several people brings the cost down sharply, potentially under $3 per person if fully shared. This works well for households or for sharing with adult children.
Free: Promotional Deals During Holiday Sales
Roku last year offered three free months of Apple TV during the holiday/Black Friday sale. The 2026 sale is just weeks away so if you’re patient, you might be able to snare another free Apple TV subscription.
Bottom Line
Apple TV is often referred to as the ‘new HBO’ because of its strong lineup of quality shows. But you don’t have to pay full price for Apple TV – or any streaming service! Follow our advice and you’ll soon be watching those great programs for free or at a reduced discount.
