HBO Max Costs Too Much: How to Get HBO Max Free Or Cheap

HBO Max has one of the strongest streaming libraries for prestige series, movies, and documentaries. Recent great shows include Succession (pictured above), Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Game of Thrones. But TV For Seniors says HBO Max costs too much – so we want to show you how to get HBO Max free or cheap!

HBO Max’s current pricing starts at $10.99/month for Basic with Ads ($109.99/year); $18.49/month for Standard ad-free ($184.99/year); and $22.99/month for Premium with 4K, more streams, and downloads ($229.99/year). If you subscribe to the regular annual rate, you might save nearly 20 percent but that is still too much. So, here’s what to do:

Cheap: Watch for Seasonal Promotional Discounts (Including Past Black Friday Deals)

HBO Max has offered some of its steepest discounts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. In late November 2025, for example, it ran a limited-time offer of $2.99 per month for the first 12 months on the Basic with Ads plan (regularly $10.99). That was roughly 70–73 percent off and available to both new and returning subscribers through December 1, 2025. After the promotional year ended, the rate returned to the then-current standard price. Total cost for the year was about $36 instead of roughly $132.

I snatched this promotional rate during Black Friday and saved roughly $100 over the year. I paid just $36 which is basically three months of the ads-included plan — and I got 12 months! Great deal!

There’s no guarantee that HBO Max will offer the same deal next month during the Black Friday sale. But the streamer has offered $2.99 deals of varying terms over the last several years so the odds are good. TV For Seniors, of course, will monitor these deals and report on the latest discounts for you.

Succession ranks as one of HBO’s best shows ever.

These deals are not available year-round but Black Friday or Cyber Monday 2026 can be one of the cheapest ways to lock in a full year of access. In addition to TV For Seniors, check HBOMax.com, the Max app, or major retailers (Apple, Google Play, Roku, etc.) around Thanksgiving. Always review the terms: most such offers apply only to the ad-supported plan and auto-renew at the regular rate afterward.

If you are concerned about subscribing to a promotional rate because you might get charged the full rate later, see our article, The Free Trial Trap, for ways to prevent that from happening.

Free: Check If You Already Have Access Through Your TV, Internet, or Phone Provider

This is the first and best place to look. Many cable, satellite, and some Internet packages still include HBO Max access at no extra charge when you pay for the channel or a qualifying tier. For example:

• Spectrum (and former Cox) TV packages such as Stream TV VIP, Pro, Signature, Gold, and Silver packages include HBO Max (Basic with Ads on lower tiers, Standard on higher ones) as a free add-on.

Some Spectrum TV plans include HBO Max for free.

• DIRECTV packages sometimes include or offer promotional access; higher packages can bundle it with other premium networks.

• Xfinity (Comcast) offers discounted bundles that can include HBO Max with Peacock or Netflix options.

• Some legacy AT&T Unlimited wireless plans still include free Max.

Log into the Max app or website and choose “Sign in through your TV, digital, or mobile provider.” Use your provider credentials. If it works, you already have it.

Free: Sample Content At HBO Max

Max maintains a “Watch for Free” collection with selected episodes from shows such as Succession, The Last of Us, Peacemaker, and others. Visit the free collection page on the Max site—no account or credit card needed. It’s limited, but useful for sampling before committing or catching up on specific episodes.

Free: Cricket Wireless Supreme Unlimited Plan

Cricket’s top prepaid plan (Supreme Unlimited, typically around $55–$60/month with AutoPay) includes HBO Max Basic with Ads at no extra charge. This is one of the cleaner “included” deals available on a prepaid carrier using the AT&T network. You activate it by signing into Max through your Cricket account. It only makes sense if the phone plan itself is a good fit for your usage.

Cheap: Verizon Netflix + HBO Max Bundle

Eligible Verizon wireless and home Internet plans can add Netflix Standard with Ads + HBO Max Basic with Ads for $13/month. That’s cheaper than buying the two ad-supported plans separately (about $20 combined). It only saves money if you actually use both services. Activate through My Verizon.

Cheap: Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max Bundle

The three-service bundle costs $21.99 a month with ads or $34.99 a month without ads. Compared with buying the three services separately at full monthly prices, the ad-supported version saves roughly 38 percent. Each service keeps its own app. This is worth it only if you already watch (or plan to watch) content across Disney+, Hulu, and Max. If you only want Max, skip it.

Cheap: Live TV Bundles That Include Max

• Philo Bundle+: Around $33/month for live channels plus HBO Max Basic with Ads, AMC+, and other apps.

• DIRECTV MyEntertainment Genre Pack: Around $35/month for live entertainment channels plus ad-supported Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and AMC+.

• Other provider packages and Internet deals (such as certain Optimum offers) sometimes include Max with service.

These work best if you also want the live channels. Otherwise, the cost of the full package can erase the streaming savings.

Other Notes and Caveats

• Student discount: Verified students can get Basic with Ads for $5.49/month via UNiDAYS (50 percent off, up to 12 months). Less relevant for most seniors, but useful for grandchildren or mixed households.

• Prime Video Channels: You can add Max (sometimes bundled with Cinemax at a discount) through Amazon. Occasional short trials appear, but there is no permanent free tier for Prime members. However, Prime Video usually offers a free seven-day trial.

What Would The TV Answer Man Do?

For starters, I would not pay full price! And with Black Friday roughly a month away, this is a great time to take advance of a likely promotional offer. If you want HBO Max, just be patient and grab that deal next month!
