HBO Max next month (November 2026) will add dozens and dozens of new movies and shows. But here are the three best new HBO Max releases for older viewers.
November 2026: 3 Best New HBO Max Releases For Older Viewers
The Gilded Age (Season 4) – HBO Original
When to Watch: November 1 (Premiere season episode; future episodes air on Sunday nights)
What Kind of Show: Historical Drama
Who’s In It: Carrie Coon, Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski
The HBO original series, which stars Carrie Coon (pictured above), Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector and Christine Baranski, chronicles high society in New York during the boom times of the 1880s. If you like Downton Abbey, and similar fare, this is right up your Jay Gould alley. Show creators say season four will focus on the clash between ‘new money’ and ‘old money’ as well as family disruptions. Mature themes, strong performances, historical detail, and high production values make The Gilded Age ideal for older audiences who enjoy quality prestige TV. Seasons one through three now available on HBO Max.
The Roses (2025)
When to Watch: November 20
What Kind of Movie: Sophisticated Comedy
Who’s In It: Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman
Did you like the Michael Douglas-Kathleen Turner movie (1989), The War of the Roses? Well, this 2025 comedy inspired by that film is tailored made for you. The Roses stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a seemingly perfect couple (architect and chef) whose marriage unravels amid career shifts, resentment, and escalating warfare. Very funny film directed by Jay Roach who helmed Meet the Parents and the Austin Powers films starring Mike Myers. (So, yeah, he knows a little something about comedy.)
Jerry Maguire (1996)
When to Watch: November 1
What Kind of Movie: Comedy/Drama
Who’s In It: Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Tom Cruise stars as a uber-confident sports agent whose ‘cushy’ life unravels when he loses a top client and is fired. He must start over with just one client (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and a single mother (Renée Zellweger) who believes in him. Directed by Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire blends romantic comedy, sports drama, and workplace satire with a sharp script and memorable lines (“Show me the money,” “You had me at hello”). Older viewers will appreciate the movie’s emphasis on character development over spectacle and Cruise and Zellweger are terrific together as the mismatched couple. If you watched Jerry Maguire when it was first released 30 years ago, it’s definitely worth a rewatch.
