Netflix is the world’s leading streaming service with literally hundreds of millions of subscribers worldwide. And with good reason. The streamer offers a vast and diverse lineup of original shows, movies and classic programming. But Netflix still costs too much! Here’s the TV For Seniors guide to watch Netflix free or cheap.

Netflix Costs Too Much!

Netflix does not offer a senior discount, AARP rate, or any age-based pricing. (Unfortunately, no major streamer offers a senior discount on their app or site.) Everyone pays the same rates. As of late 2026 in the U.S., the Netflix plan prices are:

• Standard with Ads: about $8.99 a month (1080p, 2 screens, short commercials)

• Standard (ad-free): about $19.99 a month

• Premium (4K, more screens): A whopping $26.99 a month!

There is no free trial from Netflix or a free plan. (If you see an offer for free Netflix forever, it’s highly likely to be a scam.) However, several legitimate ways do exist to pay little or nothing extra for Netflix, especially if you already have a wireless or Internet plan. Here’s what works best for seniors.

Free Or Cheap: Your Phone Or Internet Provider

• T-Mobile customers: Qualifying plans (including certain Experience More/Beyond, Go5G Plus/Next, Magenta Max, and some 55+ plans) include Netflix Standard with Ads at no extra charge. (Your TV Answer Man is one who does; it’s a great perk.) Log into your T-Mobile account (T-Life app or website), go to Manage Add-ons, and activate “Netflix on Us.” You can often upgrade to a higher Netflix tier at a discount through the same bill but yours truly can tell you that the ads-included plan is good enough; you don’t need a more expensive package. So, check your specific T-Mobile plan; many seniors already qualify without realizing it.

• Verizon customers: Eligible unlimited mobile or home Internet (Fios/5G Home) plans let you add a Netflix/HBO Max (with ads) bundle for $13 a month. If you were to buy them separately, the cost would be roughly $20 a month.

• Xfinity (Comcast) customers: StreamSaver bundles package Netflix (with ads) with Peacock and/or Apple TV (and sometimes others) in plans starting at $22 a month. Check the Xfinity StreamStore or call customer service. The Netflix/Peacock/HBO Max bundle for $22 is a 33 percent savings if you purchased them separately.

Netflix has a large library of new and older movies.

Cheap: Choose the Lowest Plan and Share Within Your Household

If you live with a spouse, adult child, or roommate who uses the same Internet connection, you can share one Netflix account legally. (The streamer no longer permits password sharing with people outside your home.) Netflix defines a “household” mainly by the devices that regularly connect to the same home Wi-Fi.

• For example, start with the $8.99 ad-supported plan. Many seniors find the short ads tolerable, especially for the savings. And if you shared the plan with just one other person in the household, that would reduce the cost to roughly $4.50.

• Be sure to separate profiles so each person has their own recommendations and watch history.

Cheap: Official Extra Member Add-On (for sharing with family who don’t live with you)

Netflix no longer allows free password sharing outside your household. The legal workaround is the Extra Member feature (available on Standard or Premium plans):

• The cost starts at $7.99 per extra person per month (ads version; $9.99 for no ads.)

• They get their own profile and login, but the main account holder pays.

• Standard plan allows 1 extra member; Premium allows up to 2.

• This could be be useful if you want to share with an adult child or grandchild who lives elsewhere and they reimburse you for their slot.

It is often only a little cheaper than just getting the $8.99 ad-supported plan themselves so compare the numbers.

Free: Temporary Free Use Through Other Providers

• DIRECTV has had promotions where new customers can sign up for a Genre Pack, add a DIRECTV Gemini streaming device, and then get 12 months of Netflix Standard with Ads at no extra charge. There is usually a device fee (around $10/month), so it is not fully free, but it can be a good deal if you want the live-TV package anyway. Keep your eyes open (and read TV For Seniors) for any promotions from your TV provider. And it’s always worth calling your current TV or Internet provider and asking specifically about Netflix promotions.

Bottom Line

Netflix definitely has fewer opportunities to stream for free or at a reduced cost, compared to its rivals. However, there are still options to make sure you don’t have to pay full price for Netflix streaming.
