HBO Max has just added 67 movies to its catalog. TV For Seniors has reviewed the list and selected the three best for older viewers.

3 Best New HBO Max Movies For Older Viewers

Anatomy Of a Fall (2023)
What Kind of Movie: Drama
Who’s In It: Sandra Huller, Swann Arlaud

Looking for a hidden gem? Sandra Huller stars as a novelist whose life becomes a legal nightmare when her husband is found dead from an apparent fall at their isolated chalet in the French Alps. The writer insists the fall was accidental but local authorities find evidence of marital strain which could implicate her. Anatomy Of a Fall, which was nominated for Best Picture, is a taut and thrilling depiction of the sometimes Kafkaesque nature of judicial proceedings, particularly in France where there are fewer protections for the accused. Huller (pictured above) is both sympathetic and suspicious in lead, keeping you guessing until the very end and perhaps even after that. This is a great, great movie! Watch it!

The Shining (1980)
What Kind of Movie: Horror
Who’s In It: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall

The chilling horror film from director Stanley Kubrick stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a dysfunctional couple who decide to caretake a remote resort while it’s closed during the winter. While we say The Shining is a horror film (and it has plenty of jump scares), it’s also a brilliant dark comedy thanks to Nicholson’s tour de force performance as Jack Torrance, a frustrated writer who truly understands that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Duvall is also convincing as the tortured (perhaps on and off the set) wife and little Danny Lloyd is a delight as their son. If you haven’t seen The Shining in awhile, it’s a great rewatch.

The Departed (2006)
What Kind of Movie: Crime Drama
Who’s In It: Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon

The Martin Scorsese 2006 crime drama with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio playing cat and mouse (and rat) in mob-run Boston. The movie, which captured the Academy Award for Best Picture, has continues to grow in stature over the years thanks to the iconic performances of the three leads and great supporting turns by Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin.
