TV For Seniors is dedicated to saving you money which is why we love stories about free streaming for seniors. So, if you’re tired of watching your TV bill skyrocket every few months, here’s some TV news that won’t cost you a plug nickel. Two excellent services – Kanopy and Hoopla – let you stream movies, TV shows, documentaries and more FOR FREE. The only requirement is a library card from a participating public library and you never have to leave your home.
Yes, no credit card is needed. No monthly fee. Nothing. And in the case of Kanopy, you don’t even have to watch commercials. Just enjoy the great entertainment.
Longtime readers know that I’ve recommended these services before, but they deserve a closer look.
Both are designed for library cardholders, and both work on computers, tablets, smart phones, and most Smart TVs and streaming devices (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, etc.). Once you’re set up, they’re as easy to use as any other streaming app.
Kanopy: Ad-Free Movies, Classics & Documentaries
Kanopy is arguably my favorite app and one that people are amazed by when I describe to them. It offers more than 30,000 titles with a strong emphasis on quality: Think classic films, independent movies, foreign cinema, Criterion Collection titles, PBS documentaries, and courses from The Great Courses.
The current catalog includes such critically-acclaimed films as Sentimental Value, Spotlight, Glengarry GlenRoss, Anora, The Master, Anatomy of a Fall…The list is endless, folks, and there is also a ton of great films that are often hard to find such as The Worst Person in the World, Francis Ha, I, Tonya and Days of Heaven, among so many others. This is the epitome of free streaming for seniors.
Unlike Tubi or Pluto TV, Kanopy is completely ad-free. Your library pays for the service so you watch without interruption.
Most libraries give you a limited number of “tickets” or plays each month—commonly around 10, though some systems offer more. Tickets renew at the start of every month and don’t carry over. Kanopy Kids content is usually unlimited.
How to get started with Kanopy
1. Go to Kanopy.com or download the free Kanopy app.
2. Click “Add Library Card” or “Sign Up.”
3. Search for your library system.
4. Enter your library card number and PIN.
5. Create a simple account with your email address.
That’s it. You’re ready to browse and stream.

Hoopla: Movies, TV, Audiobooks, Music & More
Hoopla has the more diverse lineup of the two services. In addition to movies and TV shows, it offers eBooks, audiobooks, music albums, comics, and magazines. Everything is available instantly with no waiting lists or holds.
Borrowing limits are set by your local library (often between 5 and 15 items per month). Movies and TV episodes usually stay available for three days. Audiobooks and eBooks last longer. Titles return automatically so there are never late fees.
You can stream or download content for offline viewing through the Hoopla app, which is handy if your Internet connection isn’t always reliable.
How to get started with Hoopla
1. Visit HooplaDigital.com or download the free Hoopla app.
2. Sign up with your library card number and PIN.
3. Create an account with your email.
4. Start borrowing.
Which One Is Better for You?
• Choose Kanopy if you mainly want thoughtful films, documentaries, and classic cinema without commercials.
• Choose Hoopla if you want more variety: movies plus audiobooks, music, and books.
Many libraries offer both. If yours does, you can use the same library card for each service.
A Few Caveats:
– Not every library participates with Kanopy and Hoopla. Check your library’s website or simply try signing up on Kanopy or Hoopla. They’ll inform you right away if your local library card will work. If your local branch doesn’t offer the services, some larger nearby systems sell non-resident cards for a modest annual fee.
– You’ll need a basic Internet connection. Picture quality tops out at 1080p on both services, which is fine for most viewers.
Setup usually takes only a few minutes. If the process feels confusing, many public libraries and senior centers offer free one-on-one help with technology. So don’t hesitate to ask.
Free Streaming For Seniors: Bottom Line On Kanopy and Hoopla
Kanopy and Hoopla may not have everything you want to watch. Well, we know they don’t; there’s no local channels, live sports, etc. But this is about free streaming for seniors and these two services can easily fill several nights a month with high-quality entertainment that costs you nothing. For older viewers who value good movies, clear presentation, and zero monthly bills, these two library services are among the best free options available on the market today.
