Amazon’s Prime Video today (January 1, 2025) has added 74 new movies to its lineup. Here’s the five best, in my humble opinion:

The Social Network (2010)
Director David Fincher’s brilliant take on narcissism, ambition and, ultimately, unrelenting arrogance through the lens of young Mark Zuckerberg as he builds Facebook while shedding friendships and his moral compass. Jesse Eisenberg is flawless as Zuck but don’t forget the fun supporting performances by Justin Timberlake as Napster’s Sean Parker and Armie Hammer as both of the Winkelvoss twins who claimed the Facebook founder ripped them off.

Mississippi Burning (1988)
The 1988 crime drama was based loosely on the real-life murders of three civil rights activists in the 1960s Jim Crow South. The film captured an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture as did Gene Hackman for Best Actor. While director Alan Parker took significant liberties with the real story, Hackman is the reason to watch. His performance is part Popeye Doyle from The French Connection and part Coach Norman Dale of Hoosiers. A total force of nature as he corrals the people responsible for the murders.

Do The Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee’s masterpiece stars the director as a pizza delivery employee who tries to navigate a hot summer day in race-torn Brooklyn. The film still provokes controversy for its brutal characterizations of both white and black Brooklynites but it’s an absorbing and often funny look the deep divide between races and cultures.

American Sniper (2014)
Bradley Cooper stars as Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle in this gripping and poignant portrait directed by Clint Eastwood. Cooper is brilliant as Kyle whose dedication to the mission cannot be easily shed even when he’s thousands of miles away at home.

Boogie Nights (1997)
Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s inventive 1997 take on the 1970s adult cinema industry starring Mark Wahlberg as the cut out for the legendary John Holmes. However, PTA’s film is far more than a chronicle of the SoCal adult film world from decades ago. It’s a thrilling and sometimes tragic look at a collection of lost souls who yearn for acceptance and recognition. whether they are shedding clothes for cash or slinging stereos in the Valley.
