Paramount Plus Adds 91 New Movies Today – Here’s the 7 Best

Paramount Plus with Showtime today (August 1, 2024) has added 91 new movies to its lineup. Here’s the seven best, in my humble opinion:

Pulp Fiction (1994)
Director Quentin Tarantino’s non-linear masterpiece weaves interconnected stories of crime, wit, and dark humor as only he could. And what a cast! Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken…it just goes on and on. Pulp Fiction, which has often been copied, even to some degree by Tarantino himself, should be in anyone’s list of the top 10 best movies ever. And if you disagree, allow me to retort!

Election (1999)
The satire from director Alexander Payne about a corrupt high school election stars Matthew Broderick as a overqualified teacher who’s outwitted by an overachieving student, played flawlessly by Reese Witherspoon. This is Broderick as his best since Ferris Bueller. Election is a funny, insightful film from an underrated director.

Training Day (2001)
Denzel Washington is a force of nature in this Antoine Fuqua-directed movie about a young cop (Ethan Hawke) partnered with a corrupt veteran detective (Washington) on the seedy side of Los Angeles. Washington’s magnetism dominates the screen playing the detective who believes the ends justify the means (particularly when the ends include some grafted cash). Hawke is also effective as the newbie looking to climb the ladder without losing his soul in the process. A powerful film from beginning to end.

Three Days of the Condor (1975)
The 1975 conspiratorial era drama directed by Sydney Pollock stars Robert Redford as a bookish CIA employee whose nondescript New York station crew is mysteriously gunned down by a team of assassins. Redford’s character escapes but is soon hunted by a ‘deep state’ set of rogue government agents so he kidnaps a random (and, of course, beautiful) pedestrian played by Faye Dunaway and holes away in her apartment. Pollock taps into the 70s deep-rooted distrust of all things government to deliver a suspenseful cat-and-mouse thriller with strong performances from Redford and Dunaway.

Face/Off (1997)
The action-drama from director John Woo stars John Travolta and Nic Cage as an FBI agent and master criminal (respectively) who switch faces and identities while engaging in a cat-and-mouse chase. Only Woo, Travolta and Cage could pull this off but it’s a rockin’ 133 minutes of action, over-the-top acting, and humor.

Fatal Attraction (1987)
The 1987 drama from director Adrian Lyne that did more to curb adultery than any 1,000 sermons. Michael Douglas plays an attorney whose life is turned upside down when he has an affair with a disturbed book editor (Glenn Close) who’s never met a rabbit she liked. The film is a taut and juicy depiction of what people will do when emotions are stretched and temptation is dangled.

Tombstone (1993)
Tombstone, the 1993 western starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc ‘I’m Your Huckleberry’ Holliday. Russell is good, but Kilmer is masterful in the role of the terminally ill gunslinger who seems to tempt (and cheat) death at every turn.

Honorable mentions to Almost Famous, Chaplin, Full Metal Jacket, The Untouchables, City of God, and Zodiac.
