The 2026 NFL regular season starts in three days with the Wednesday (September 9) game (8:20 p.m. ET kickoff) between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on NBC and Peacock. Where Are the Games Broadcast?
Sunday afternoons still belong to CBS and Fox. Sunday Night Football is on NBC and Peacock. Monday Night Football is on ESPN (with some games also on ABC). Thursday Night Football is on Amazon’s Prime Video. And a few special games land on Netflix or the NFL Network.
How to Watch NFL Games Free or Cheap
The Free Option: A Digital TV Antenna
The TV antenna – yes, the type your Mom and Dad used when you were a kid – is still the best deal in television. (If already own one, indoor or outdoor, you don’t have to pay an extra dime to watch your local channels.) Most Sunday afternoon games (the ones involving your local team or the national CBS/Fox broadcasts) and many Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football games (when they’re simulcast on ABC) can be watched for free with an antenna.
Where to Start:
• Buy a simple indoor antenna (many cost $20–$40).
• Connect it to the antenna input on your TV.
• Run the channel scan (it usually can be found in your TV’s Settings, Channels, Antenna or Auto Program).
Once you scan the channels, you’ll get your local CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC network affiliates in High-Definition with no fee.
One Caveat: An antenna’s reception depends on how close you live to the local station’s broadcast towers. (Visit antennaweb.org and input your address to see which stations you are likely to get.) Most viewers in the suburbs and rural areas should have no issues with a good indoor antenna, which can be installed quite easily by anyone. However, if your picture is weak, maybe try a small outdoor or attic antenna. (Hire a professional to install an outdoor antenna; we don’t want you getting hurt.)
Tip for seniors: Look for an antenna with a clear “amplified” label and easy setup instructions. Many come with a long cable so you can place it near a window.
The TV antenna can give you the majority of regular season games for free, assuming you are able to receive your local signals. It’s the single biggest money-saver in television.
Free or Nearly Free Streaming Add-Ons
Thursday Night Football
Amazon has the Thursday Night Football games exclusively on Prime Video. If you already have an Amazon Prime membership, they’re included so you don’t have to pay an extra fee. But here’s a big tip if you don’t have a Prime membership: The Amazon Thursday night games also stream for free on Twitch (Amazon’s live gaming service). And you can watch on a computer, phone, tablet, or Smart TV without creating a Twitch account.
Low-Cost Streaming Packages (Under $15–$30 a Month)
If the antenna alone isn’t enough for you for most regular season games, these options will keep costs low:
• Paramount Plus’ Essential plan, which is $8.99 a month, streams CBS Sunday afternoon games in most markets. An AARP membership can get you 10 percent off a subscription.
• Peacock Premium with ads, which is $12.99 a month, carries every Sunday Night Football game and some exclusive contests.
• Fox One, which offers all NFL games broadcast on your local Fox network affiliate, is $19.99 a month However, you can now get the streamer for $99 for one year, which would bring the monthly price to $8.25. See this link for more details.
• The ESPN Unlimited App, which is $31.99 a month, has Monday Night Football games and the NFL Network. However, if you have a pay TV subscription to select providers (cable, satellite, live streaming), your subscription may give you free access to the app. Below is a list of the providers with links on how to access ESPN Unlimited.

Lastly, the NFL Plus streaming service, which starts at $6.99 a month, lets you watch local and primetime games on a phone or tablet. It’s handy if you travel or want to watch on a smaller screen.
Many people combine a free antenna with one or two of these services only during the football season and cancel afterward. That is a smart approach to keeping your yearly cost reasonable.
Live TV Streaming Services (If You Want More Channels For More Than Football)
Live streaming services such as Sling TV, YouTube TV, Fubo, or DIRECTV streaming carry the major networks plus ESPN and NFL Network. Prices start in the $40–$80 range depending on the package. However, be on the lookout for:
• Promotional pricing or free trials (YouTube TV often has longer trials than its rivals).
• Sports-only or “skinny” packages that cost less than full cable.
These are more expensive than the antenna-plus-one-or-two-apps approach, but they’re still usually cheaper than traditional cable or satellite.
More Deals Worth Checking Out
• Verizon has offered free NFL Sunday Ticket (the out-of-market package that’s exclusive to YouTube) to certain wireless or home internet customers. Eligibility changes, so check your My Verizon app or account if you’re a customer. See our article for more details.
• YouTube offers student, military, first-responder, and teacher discounts for the Sunday Ticket. But there is still no senior discount (something we’ve pointed out before).
• Watch for short free trials or first-month offers on the individual streaming apps at the start of the season. The streamers use the NFL’s start to lure new subscribers.
Lastly, an AARP membership, which costs $15 a year for the first year, enables you to get $40 off an annual Walmart Plus plan which includes either Paramount Plus or Peacock for free. That reduces the annual price of Walmart Plus to $58 (normal price: $98.) If you already have an AARP membership – and you are in the market for either Peacock or Paramount Plus – this is a great deal.
Quick Setup Tips for Seniors
1. Start with the antenna; it’s free after the one-time purchase.
2. Use the free apps already on your Smart TV or Roku/Fire TV stick.
3. Only add paid services for the games you really care about.
4. Write down your usernames and passwords of the streaming services in a notebook for easy reference.
5. Ask a family member or a patient store clerk to help with the first scan or app download if the remote feels confusing. Once it’s set up, watching is usually just pressing the right input or app button.
